Intensive training: VP author & PBL tutor

The CROESUS project embodies a number of training, teaching and learning activities, to ensure the implementation of VP into the courses, and create a positive pedagogic change in student learning.

The traditional role of the tutor in a small group of students is one of the leader or instructor. Typically, the tutor initiates proceedings and demonstrates control over the content and process with a short statement or summary and then tries to draw out students' thoughts, periodically linking them together and redirecting the content of discussions as appropriate.

One of the main training activities has been to train academics/clinicians to facilitate PBL sessions appropriately for student groups. PBL training involves the understanding of the PBL process to deliver information in a structured way but also being able to prompt students in the right direction when. Ensuring correct training is given to PBL facilitators will ensure the session is delivered well and that students get the most out of the session and hit all the necessary learning objectives. After the preliminary training there will be specific issues that will need to be discussed with those staff who will take on the responsibility of training new PBL tutors in the future. Training the trainers for future tutors, will require them to understand not just the the PBL process but also the student cognitive behaviour during a PBL session.

The project has also trained staff to create VPs which are suitable to use within PBL sessions. The training has been on how to create the VP using a VP authoring software (Open Labyrinth 3.x) and training on how to construct the narrative and options within the VP. The software training concentrated on using features to play the VP cases within the PBL sessions as well as using the software to create the cases and understand the rules of authoring using the specific software.
