Terry PoultonTerry Poulton (SGUL, London)

Prof. Terry Poulton is Associate Dean for e-Learning and Head of the e-Learning Unit at SGUL, a research and service unit whose research is focused chiefly on innovation in the field of virtual patients, and curriculum transformation through scenario-based learning. He is also and visiting Senior Research Associate at the Karolinska Institute. He has obtained 23 national and international grants, the latest ones focusing on (i) leadership of the successful EC-funded programme eViP which, researched the feasibility of, and then developed, a bank of VPs for European-wide use (ii) the development of the Tempus ePBLnet programme, also leading the curriculum transformation element of that project, (iii) the Croesus project, a Strategic Partnership embedding ‘clinical decision-making’ VP s into PBL in the Czech Republic and Slovakia (iV) VP development as a core member of the eContentplus- funded mEducator project.

Sheetal KaviaSheetal Kavia (SGUL, London)

Sheetal Kavia’s expertise lies in developing virtual scenarios for a range of learning styles, training others in creating virtual scenarios and developing learning resources for mobile devices. She has been involved in a number of projects focused around virtual patients some of these include the time higher education award winning PREVIEW project, a JISC funded national project called G4.5 involving 16 medical schools across the UK and currently working on a Tempus funded project called ePBLnet. Other current projects involve the development of mobile applications such as TGCA, MedEdCases and MedEdEthics.


Ella Iskrenko-PoultonElla Iskrenko-Poulton (SGUL, London)

Dr. Ella Iskrenko is a Problem Based Learning Tutor-Trainer at SGUL. She has a Doctor of Science (International Economics) and a PhD in Political Economy. Ella has been working as a university teacher for 30 years, including 6 years as Dean of the Faculty of Continuous Education and 6 years as a PBL tutor-trainer at SGUL. She has an extensive background in teaching and the organization of teaching, with a history of innovation in a variety of teaching style from large didactic lecture formats to small group PBL tutorials. She has participated in 3 EU grants in the fields of education and training. In the EC project ePBLnet she has been the PBL trainer for three countries and 6 universities. Her professional and research interests include student behaviour and performance in the use of interactive VP/ PBL in Medicine and Healthcare.


Daniel SchwarzDaniel Schwarz (MU, Brno)

Dr. Daniel Schwarz holds master and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Brno University of Technology. His research is focused on medical image processing, pattern recognition and ICT applications in medical education. Since 2006 he has been a member of the Coordination Committee of MEFANET and since 2014 he has been its elected president. He is the founder of the MEFANET Journal and its editor-in-chief. Since 2007 he has been organizing annual international conferences MEFANET 2007-2014. He has been principal investigator in several (inter)national projects, including: “CROESUS - Clinical reasoning skills enhancements with the use of simulations and algorithms“ (Erasmus+), “MEFANET e-publishing platform” (ESF), “MEFANET clinical reasoning“ (ESF). He has authored and co-authored 2 monographs, 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals and more than 60 conference contributions.

Jaroslav MajerníkJaroslav Majerník (UPJŠ, Košice)

Dr. Jaroslav Majerník received his PhD degree in bionics and biomechanics at Technical University in Kosice, Slovakia. His professional and research interests include medical informatics, multimedia, digital image processing and motion analysis. He is author or co-author of seven books and more than 130 research works. He participated in 30 research projects, including 5 EU grants in the fields of education, biomechanics and computer science. Currently, he acts as assistant professor and the head of Department of Medical Informatics at the Faculty of Medicine, Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice, Slovakia. He is a member of ESMAC, MEFANET Coordination Council, MEFANET Journal Editorial Board and Multimedia Technology Editorial Board.
